Industry Ready for Recovery

A prolonged crisis, unstable markets, and mounting pressure on resources: for the past few years, the French sawmilling industry has been navigating through turbulent times… yet it continues to stand firm. Professionals across the sector are facing a succession of challenges, including the slowdown in construction, ever-rising costs, supply difficulties, and broader economic uncertainty. And yet, on the ground, a different dynamic is emerging.

Sawmills are not waiting for recovery — they are reinventing themselves. Modernization of production tools, automation, move upmarket, product diversification, integration of secondary processing… In just a few years, the sector has transformed significantly. There are fewer companies, but production volumes remain stable. Productivity is improving, and business strategies are becoming more refined. Value is no longer based solely on quantities produced, but increasingly on the ability to process, assemble, and deliver tailor-made solutions. The sawmill is becoming as much a service provider as a manufacturing player.

Another major transformation underway is the growing strength of collective action. Partnerships, shared resources, joint strategies… in an increasingly volatile market, working together is no longer simply an option — it is an opportunity.

One uncertainty remains: demand. The recovery of the construction sector, the momentum of renovation projects, and public policy decisions will all be decisive factors. Wood has many advantages, but they still need to be fully recognized. While any rebound is unlikely to be immediate or uniform, the French sawmilling industry is already gearing up and fully intends to seize the opportunity.
