Soprema is leading the European Hibiscus project, a large-scale research and development programme aimed at rethinking construction materials in order to reduce the sector’s dependence on fossil resources. Launched last September, the project brings together eleven European partners—laboratories, SMEs and large companies—around a common goal: to design high-performance bio-based construction products aligned with the ambitions of the Green Deal and the European bioeconomy strategy. The challenge is significant for a sector responsible for a substantial share of CO₂ emissions and waste: replacing petroleum-based raw materials with alternatives derived from renewable resources while ensuring durability, performance, and circularity. The consortium, which includes the CNRS, CSTB, Fraunhofer, the University of Liège, and the Bioeconomy for Change network, is working on the development of five innovative bio-based products for the building envelope: two roofing waterproofing solutions based on pine resins and recycled cooking oils, two thermal and acoustic insulation materials derived from lignin and carbohydrates, and a joinery solution based on vegetable oils.
